Group Music for Kids
With over 15 years teaching experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Music at the University of Melbourne, Casey is a passionate musician and educator. She has a unique way of delivering her group music classes to children of all ages and abilities. Through song, dance, storytelling and other play-based learning techniques, Casey's group music classes enable children to understand and feel rhythm, character, melody and harmony in music.
Casey’s aim is to give children an opportunity to experience the benefits of music. On a personal level this means a way to creatively express oneself and connect with their own identity, culture, emotions and feelings. On a social level, the act of music making brings people together and inspires creative collaboration and connection.
Her desire is that all children will find it a positive and joyful experience and some will find a passion in it, establishing a solid musical foundation to continue to add to throughout their lives.
Core workshop ideas include:
The body as an instrument (exploration of the voice and body through percussion)
Body awareness through movement (improvised movement to various musical examples)
Character, colour and mood (exposure to different music from around the world)
Feeling and understanding rhythm, beat and time (identifying different rhythms, the underlying beat and time signatures)
Dynamics, accents and velocity (how do these factors change the feel of the music?)
Range and pitch (knowing the limitations of different instruments)
Layering sounds (appreciating the space between the sounds)
The importance of listening and responding (the key elements to group music making)
Improvisation and group ensemble techniques (how do we work together and still express ourselves individually?)
Role of the conductor (building confidence to lead an ensemble or group
Visually identifying mood, colour and character in music with flash cards
Improvised movement to music reinforces listening and responding
Singing together is especially important in younger years
A variety of flashcards help with understanding rhythm and time
Class structures, prices, age groups
Small group classes of 8 - 10 children enable optimal one-on-one student/teacher engagement and are usually 30 minutes to 1 hour in duration. Prices range from $15 - $25 per student (with sibling discounts available).
Shorter workshops of 1 to 2 hours are available for festivals and events and can be tailored for parental involvement and larger numbers. Please get in touch for pricing.
Consecutive 3 day workshops provide the best learning experience as children build their confidence and understanding of basic principles and core musical ideas. By day three children are delighted to know they can make music in a group ensemble environment - working together to create a piece of music as one. Casey usually offers these during school holiday times and they range in price depending on what is offered (sometimes lunch and/or morning tea is included).
Age groups are usually divided into the following: 3-5yrs, 5-7yrs, 7-9yrs, 9-12yrs and teenagers (13-17yrs)
Included : all instruments, sound equipment and materials are provided. Sometimes older students are encouraged to bring to class instruments that they are learning privately outside of the group class.
Certifications : Casey has completed a bachelor of music at the University of Melbourne, has her current public liability insurance, police check and working with children’s check as well as a background in dance and theatre.
Casey is currently travelling Australia for the remainder of 2024 and is only available for enquiries for 2025. Her classes and workshops can be brought to your town, festival school or event.
